Fourth Innings Double Centuries In Tests

Image
DOULE CENTURY IN FOURTH INNINGS: There have been five instances of a double century in the fourth innings of a test match: George Headley  223 for West Indies   vs England at Kingston  Jamaica in 1930 Bill Edrich  219 for England  vs South Africa at Durban in 1939 Sunil Gavaskar 221 for India  vs England at the Oval London in 1979 Gordon Greenidge 214 not out for West Indies   vs England at Lords London in 1984 Nathan Astle 222 for New Zealand  vs England at Christchurch in 2002 Four of these feats were achieved against England, and the only time it was not, it was done by an Englishman himself! The first three of these matches ended in draws: George Headley in 1930  single-handedly battled to save the West Indies after they had been set a target of 826. The match lasted seven days,  and became the first test to be drawn by mutual agreement, with the West Indies ending at 408/5. The English had to catch their boat...

Tea or Coffee?

Which is healthier -  tea or coffee? The question can be analysed piecemeal. CAFFEINE Both coffee and several types of tea include caffeine, but coffee contains a much higher concentration. For this reason, those apt to drink large quantities are better off sticking to tea so that they don't exceed the daily recommendation of 300 milligrams. Drinking too much coffee can result in a high intake of caffeine which can disrupt sleep and rob calcium from bones (if you consume too little calcium from foods). And some studies suggest that high intakes of caffeine during pregnancy can increase the risk of miscarriage. ANTIOXIDANTS Coffee has its advantages, but tea wins in the war of the antioxidants. While green tea is most commonly associated with antioxidants, white tea actually contains more. Coffee also contains antioxidants, but in a much lower concentration than white tea. Studies have determined that both coffee and tea have health benefits. Providing you don't load y...

Remembering Keith Miller: Today is the 15th death anniversary of Keith Miller (28th Nov 1919 to 11th Oct 2004).  He was the first great all-rounder in cricket, and a  trail-blazer for later all-rounders like Kapil Dev, Gary Sobers, Ian Botham, Imran Khan,  Richard Hadlee, Shaun Pollock, Jacques Kallis and many others.  Keith Miller is regarded as Australia's greatest ever all-rounder. Because of his ability, irreverent manner and good looks he was a crowd favourite. In 55 tests, Miller scored 2958 runs as a right-handed batsman  at an average of 36.97, with 7 hundreds and 13 fifties. As a right-arm fast bowler, he took 170 wickets at an average of 22.97. This included seven  five-wicket hauls and one ten-wicket haul. He is probably best remembered for his new-ball partnership with Ray Lindwall, but it was as a classical batsman that he first made his mark: a photograph of Miller executkng a textbook square-drive adorned the desk of the cricket-l...

India and Human Development

India and Human Development: The HDI (Human Development Index)  for India was 0.640 in 2018, ranking 130th out of 189 countries. Between 1990 and 2017, India’s life expectancy at birth  increased by nearly 11 years, with even more significant gains in  expected years of schooling. Today’s Indian school-age children can expect to stay in school for 4.7 years longer than in 1990. Whereas, India’s GNI per capita increased by a staggering 266.6 percent between 1990 and 2017. However, inequality remains a challenge for India as it progresses economically. The gap between the rich and the poor seems to be widening. An indicator of the level of health enjoyed by Indians is that  in 2017, terrorism claimed the lives of 766 Indians, or 0.007% of all deaths, while health reasons claimed 6.6 million Indians, or 90% of all deaths. In 2017, the last year for which comparable data are available, India’s spending on defence was double its health expenditure, according to the...
